THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM

EYFS NATIONAL CURRICULUM

At our school, we follow a broad, relevant, and meaningful curriculum which, as a team, we are very proud of. Children have a thirst for learning at Rodbourne Cheney Primary School, and we are committed to nurturing young writers, performers, readers, international speakers, mathematicians, scientists, historians, geographers, artists, designers, musicians, sportspeople, and computer users.

We follow a thematic and book-based curriculum so that children can be completely immersed in their learning and passionate about literature and reading. As our curriculum is rich with thematic learning, it enables us to provide many themed days, educational visits, and visitors that really bring our subjects to life. We also hold termly parent class events so that parents can come in and experience our learning topic along with our children.

For teaching mathematics, we follow a maths mastery approach. Teaching maths for mastery helps pupils to develop a deep and secure knowledge and understanding of mathematics at each stage of their learning.

All of the programmes of study we deliver meet the national curriculum requirements issued by the DfE. The national curriculum is comprised of three core subjects — English, mathematics, and science — as well as the following foundation subjects:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Design and Technology
  • Art
  • Music
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Computing
  • Religious Education
  • MFL (Modern Foreign Languages)

Arts

Every child from Year 1 to Year 6 has a sketchbook which we use when we are creating, learning and developing new ideas and techniques in art. Here are some examples from @RcpsSwans when they sketched wolves as part of their class book 'Wolves in the Walls' focus.
